Origin Fly Fishing Journeys

My name is Darrell Hanks, and I’m the owner and guide at Origin Fly Fishing Journeys. The heart of Origin Fly Fishing is simple: to offer an experience of renewal through connection—connection to wild places, to fish, and to people—through the timeless art of fly fishing.

I take great joy in teaching beginners, helping them discover the beauty and rhythm of fly fishing. I also enjoy working with experienced anglers, sharing the finer points of reading water, casting, and fishing these storied rivers. I have a special passion for two-handed fly rods (Spey rods), and over the years I’ve taught countless classes and schools. It’s been a privilege to serve as an instructor for the Orvis Spey Casting School, working alongside their head instructor, Peter Krutzer.

“I have been fishing with and guided by Darrell for going on 20 years, and I consider him to be a good friend. Darrell has vast river knowledge, as well as experience both on the oars and fishing a two-handed rod. In my opinion, he is one of the best fly fishing guides and boatsmen in the entire Pacific Northwest.”

Robert Meiser, R.B. Meiser Fly Rods

My guiding journey began in the early 1990s, and I’ve been guiding on the Rogue River for over 30 years. The knowledge I carry comes from both experience and from mentors—older generations of guides who worked these waters since the mid-20th century. I feel a deep responsibility to honor that heritage, and part of my role as a guide is to pass along the stories, history, and traditions of these rivers to those who join me.

When you fish with Origin Fly Fishing, you’ll float wild rivers in classic wooden boats, seeking adventure, solitude, and renewal in some of the most beautiful places the Northwest has to offer.
